List of Michelin Star Restaurants in the United States

Austin Chegini
26 Mar 2021

Since 1900, the Michelin car company has published the Michelin Guide to help motorists find hotels, gas stations, and other services while traveling. At first, the company imagined it to be a free book for car owners, but now, the Michelin Guide is one of the most pre-eminent restaurant review platforms, especially when it comes to fine dining. Restaurateurs around the world strive to earn the coveted Michelin Star, often supported by modern technologies like a restaurant POS system to streamline operations.

Letโ€™s see why Michelin stars are important, and review which restaurants in the United States have earned these awards.

Why are Michelin stars important?

The hospitality industry is very competitive. Many restaurants offer the same dishes, making it hard for customers to know what separates the good from the bad establishments. And with so many restaurants dotting the map, consumers rely on customer and professional reviews to find great food nearby.

The Michelin star is one of the foremost important reviews. Because reviewers have such high standards, earning a single star is incredibly difficult. Of the hundreds of thousands of restaurants that exist worldwide, fewer than 4,000 have earned a Michelin star. In the United States, under 200 restaurants have gained the accolade.

For this reason, receiving a Michelin Star is a sign of distinction that shows the world you produce high-quality, great-tasting meals. If you want more information, see how to earn a Michelin Star here.

How many stars can a restaurant get?

Michelin awards restaurants with one to three stars. While their ranking methodology is a close-guarded secret, the Michelin Guide explains what each star means.

  • One Star: "A very good restaurant in its category" - Meals are consistently delicious and meet the highest standards compared to similar restaurants.
  • Two Stars: "Excellent cooking, worth a detour" - These restaurants offer such great service that you should not hesitate to visit them during a visit to town.
  • Three Stars: โ€œExceptional cuisine, worth a special journeyโ€ - These restaurants prepare such delicious meals and offer such outstanding service that they merit a special trip.

Michelin star restaurants in major US Cities

Michelin began reviewing U.S. restaurants in 2005. Despite how large the country is, the guide only focuses on major cities at this time. Letโ€™s look at some of the Michelin-star restaurants in these markets.

Chicago

A hotbed of culture, Chicago caters to a wide range of culinary tastes. While only one restaurant has won the highest three-star rating, all of these establishments on this list are worth a visit.
